Váczi Eszter Quartet

Váczi Eszter Quartet

A very wide audience in Hungary is familiar with Eszter Váczi and her fabulous voice as she sang in the famous jazz-pop band Jazz+Az at the end of 90’s, and also released a pop duet song with Bery, which topped the radio charts for a whole year in 2001-2002.

When it came to her own music, however, Eszter Váczi’s interests always lied in jazz. Already from 1997, Eszter sang in ‘Szörp’, an acid jazz band known for their very popular live shows, and after her graduation from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Eszter formed her own acoustic jazz band The Váczi Eszter Quartet in 2002.

The audience had to wait seven years for the band’s first album, but the Quartet only matured for the better thanks to their numerous live shows and a collaboration with one of the biggest names in the Hungarian theatre, Róbert Alföldi, where the Quartet provided music for the director’s show in the Thália theatre for six whole years. During this time, Eszter realised that original songs with Hungarian words are the best way to express herself as an artist.

The first release in 2009 ‘Vissza hozzád’ (Back to you) was an immense success, the sales reaching a platinium certification. In the same year, the band was commissioned to write the music for Dénes Orosz’s film ‘Poligamy’, and in 2010, their debut album was nominated for the Hungarian Labels’ Association Award ‘Fonogram’ in the Best Jazz Album category.

The follow-up came in 2011 entitled ‘Eszter kertje’ (Eszter’s garden), and with even bigger ambitions from the band this time. They chose to work with the grammy-awarded Helik Hadar as the sound-engineer and co-producer of the album. The result has amazing quality, and proudly stands next to Madeleine Peyroux, Norah Jones, Daphné, Charles Aznavour in quality. The album again earned a nomination for the Fonogram award in the best Jazz album category.
